Positive mindset
By iNSPIRE Sport
Either a positive or negative mindset can determine the outcome of your day – however, one will be more favourable. A positive mindset doesn’t just improve your training but also other areas of your life. Below iNSPIRE discusses the benefits of a positive mindset with some tips and tricks to help you achieve such a mindset.
What is a positive mindset?
By definition, according to Positive Psychology “positive thinking is a mental and emotional attitude that focuses on the bright side of life and expects positive results”.
The benefits of a positive mindset?
Multiple studies have found a positive mindset has many physical and mental benefits.
One study conducted found negative thinking signals the body’s immune system and a positive attitude can improve your immune system. The meta-analysis consisted of more than 300 studies over 30 years of inquiries.
Further studies found that positive thinking reduces anxiety and positive people are less likely to engage in unhealthy behaviours. You can read more about these studies here.
Tips to achieve it
There are plenty of ways to achieve positive thinking in your day to day life. Below are some tips that you can try to implement in your everyday routine and approach to training, school or other commitments.
Starting the day with a positive affirmation can set the tone for your whole day. This affirmation can be something as simple as “I am going to have a great training session today”. Really anything that reinforces confidence and success.
Look at failures as lessons. This will allow you to approach your daily life with less anxieties and negativity since everything will have a beneficial outcome, regardless of the result.
Focusing on the present will help you stay grounded and not get too caught up in stressing over past events that can’t be changed and also prevent you from stressing about future events that haven’t occurred yet. While goals help guide your journey, focusing on where you are in the moment will allow you to be more productive.
